Cessna 180 Spirit of Columbus
Jerrie Mock used this Cessna 180 to become the first woman to complete a solo flight around the world. Extra fuel, radios, navigation equipment, and survival gear prepared the airplane for the journey. The Spirit of Columbus balanced fuel capacity, payload, communication, navigation, weather, maintenance, and pilot endurance. The basic utility aircraft became a mission-specific system.

The work behind a record flight
Long-distance flying exposed the difference between an aircraft's advertised performance and the demands of a real journey. More fuel extended range but increased takeoff weight.
