Two working reconstructions reveal the foundation of XRU: place can become an interface, difficult relationships can become manipulable, and learners understand more when they can choose where to look next.

The through-line

Systems thinking in service of understanding.

A useful learning environment has parts that must work together: reliable evidence, an intelligible structure, accessible controls, meaningful choices, feedback, and a way for learners to explain what they discovered.

The tools here span film, early web media, interactive geometry, panoramic imaging, and modern browsers. Their shared purpose is simple: reveal the system and let the learner investigate it.

Earth Traveler · Grades 6–12

A mapped panoramic city before Street View.

Film panoramas, an aerial map, place descriptions, and non-linear navigation create an early geographic learning environment. Learners can compare how the web represented place before today’s map platforms made this behavior ordinary.

The surviving archive contains IBM HotMedia and Apple QuickTime VR editions. It predates Google Maps (2005) and Street View (2007), making it a documented precursor in spirit rather than a claim of corporate lineage.

Abstract mathematics becomes visible and controllable.

Parametric mathematics, Bézier and Hermite curves, B-splines, surfaces, topology, solids, and rendering become an interactive path from coordinates to manufactured and digital worlds.

The period interface remains available as evidence while the learning sequence now runs in a responsive, plugin-free browser laboratory.

    Earth Traveler connects an aerial map of Austin with 38 film-based panoramas, place descriptions, and non-linear navigation in IBM HotMedia and Apple QuickTime VR.

    Mathematics becomes manipulable

    A graduate-level special-topic project turns curves, surfaces, solids, and geometric relationships into short interactive lessons rather than static diagrams.

    Museums and public places become enterable

    High-resolution panoramic imaging preserves scale, adjacency, objects, and atmosphere. The virtual visit becomes a source environment rather than a substitute photograph.

    One place gains multiple learning paths

    Transcripts, descriptive text, keyboard navigation, audio, maps, and readable companion modes let more learners investigate the same evidence in different ways.

    The archive becomes a learning system

    Immersive records, sourced interpretation, inquiry prompts, curriculum connections, local progress, and printable reflection now work together as free public learning.
